Why Southwest Ohio Is a Hidden Gem for Riders

Ask most riders about great motorcycle roads and they'll mention the Dragon in Tennessee or the mountains out west. But here's the thing — we've got some seriously underrated riding right here in southwest Ohio. Rolling farmland, winding creek roads, covered bridges, and small towns with character. You don't need to trailer your bike 500 miles to find a great ride.

The area between Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Chillicothe offers hundreds of miles of scenic routes that most out-of-state riders never discover. That's good news for us locals. Less traffic, more curves, and the kind of roads that remind you why you bought a motorcycle in the first place.

At Clinton County Motorsports in Wilmington, we're right in the heart of this riding territory. Our customers regularly share their favorite routes, and we've compiled the best of them here for 2026. Whether you're on a Kawasaki Versys looking for all-day adventure, a Triumph Bonneville soaking in the scenery, or a Suzuki sport bike hunting corners — these roads deliver.

The Covered Bridge Scenic Byway Loop

This is the route we recommend to almost everyone who asks. The Covered Bridge Scenic Byway runs through Preble County northwest of Dayton, and it's absolutely worth the trip. You'll hit five historic covered bridges, each one a perfect excuse to stop, stretch your legs, and snap a photo.

Start in Xenia and head west on US-35 toward Eaton. From there, pick up the byway and let it wind you through some of the prettiest countryside in Ohio. The roads are well-maintained, traffic is light on weekdays, and you'll find a nice mix of sweeping curves and straightaways.

Plan for about 3-4 hours if you want to actually enjoy the stops. There are a few small-town diners along the way where you can grab lunch and talk bikes with the locals. This route is perfect for cruisers, adventure bikes, or really anything comfortable enough for a half-day ride.

Pro Tip: Timing Your Ride

Hit the Covered Bridge Scenic Byway on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning in late spring or early fall. You'll practically have the roads to yourself, and the light through the covered bridges is perfect for photos around 10am.

Ohio Route 41: The Springfield to Hillsboro Run

If you want curves and elevation changes, Route 41 between Springfield and Hillsboro is your road. This north-south route cuts right through the middle of southwest Ohio and delivers the kind of riding that makes you glad you own a motorcycle.

Starting in Springfield, you'll head south through small towns and agricultural land before the road starts getting interesting around Washington Court House. Keep going south toward Hillsboro and the terrain opens up with longer sweeping turns and some genuine elevation. It's not the Appalachian mountains, but for Ohio, this stretch has real character.

The whole run is about 60 miles one way, making it perfect for an afternoon ride. Plenty of our customers on Yamaha MT series bikes and KTM Dukes love this road for its mix of technical sections and faster sweepers. You can easily extend the ride by connecting to other routes once you hit Hillsboro.

Paint Creek State Park and Chillicothe Area Routes

Head east from Wilmington toward Chillicothe and you'll find some of the most scenic riding in the region. The roads around Paint Creek State Park offer tight curves, tree-lined stretches, and water views that feel more like Kentucky than Ohio.

US-50 east from Hillsboro toward Chillicothe is a solid main route, but the real gems are the smaller county roads that branch off. Routes like SR-753 and SR-159 wind through the foothills and give adventure bike riders — think Kawasaki KLR650 or Yamaha Ténéré — some genuinely engaging terrain.

Chillicothe itself makes a great lunch stop. It's Ohio's first capital, and the downtown has good food and enough history to make the stop worthwhile. From there, you can loop back through Washington Court House and into Wilmington, making a full day of it.

This area also connects to the Hocking Hills region if you want to extend into a weekend trip. Just be aware that Hocking Hills gets crowded on summer weekends, so plan accordingly.

Top 7 Roads to Ride Near Cincinnati and Dayton in 2026

Based on feedback from our customers and our own saddle time, here are the roads that belong on every Ohio rider's list this year:

  1. Ohio Route 350 — Runs east from Hillsboro with excellent curves and minimal traffic. One of the best-kept secrets in the region.
  2. Ohio Route 73 — Connects Wilmington to the Waynesville area with smooth pavement and scenic farmland views. Great for a quick morning ride.
  3. US Route 22 — The stretch between Wilmington and Circleville offers a nice mix of terrain and connects you to central Ohio routes.
  4. Oregonia Road — North of Wilmington, this winding road follows the Little Miami River and feels like you're somewhere else entirely.
  5. Ohio Route 136 — West of Hillsboro, this road delivers tight corners and rolling hills. Sport bike riders love it.
  6. Ohio Route 380 — A lesser-known route east of Xenia with good pavement and almost zero traffic.
  7. Caesar Creek Lake Loop — Combine several county roads around Caesar Creek for a scenic hour-long loop with water views.

Most of these routes are within 30-45 minutes of Wilmington, making Clinton County Motorsports an ideal starting point for your day on two wheels.

Choosing the Right Bike for Ohio Roads

The best motorcycle for Ohio riding depends on what kind of roads call to you. Our region has a good mix of everything — from tight county roads to longer highway stretches — so versatility matters.

For riders who want to do a bit of everything, adventure bikes like the Kawasaki Versys 650 or Yamaha Tracer are hard to beat. They're comfortable enough for all-day rides, handle well on curvy roads, and won't punish you on the occasional gravel stretch. We sell a lot of these to riders who've figured out that comfort and capability beat raw speed for real-world enjoyment.

Sport touring bikes and standard nakeds are also excellent choices. The Triumph Speed Twin, Suzuki SV650, and KTM 390 Duke all thrive on the roads we've described here. If you're primarily doing shorter rides with friends, something like a Kawasaki Z650 or Yamaha MT-07 hits the sweet spot of fun and practicality.

Planning Group Rides from the Wilmington Area

One of the best things about riding in southwest Ohio is the central location. Wilmington sits almost perfectly between Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus, which makes it an ideal meeting point for group rides with friends from different cities.

If you're organizing a group ride, pick a route that matches your slowest rider's comfort level. The Ohio Route 73 corridor and Caesar Creek Lake loop are great for mixed-skill groups because the roads are scenic but forgiving. Save the tighter stuff like Route 350 for days when everyone in the group has similar experience.

Keep your groups manageable — 4-6 riders is ideal for Ohio's two-lane roads. Larger groups tend to get separated at lights and stop signs, and you end up spending more time regrouping than riding. Establish a clear sweep rider, agree on gas stops beforehand, and make sure everyone knows the lunch destination.

We see a lot of Can-Am Spyder and Polaris Slingshot riders meeting up for group cruises on these routes too. The three-wheel crowd has grown significantly around here, and the roads accommodate them well.
